Culture Shock (Choque cultural)
This is normal, even with a short stay in another country. Places are different and we are creatures of habit. We are used to foods, drink, norms, and values that are common and normal for us. Here is some information about the different phases of cultural adjustment: http://www.cie.uci.edu/prepare/shock.shtml
Advice from a Past Participant
El Prétil is like our brickyard. A great place to meet and hang out together. Lots of streets off of it have restaurants and bars. Everyone seemed to love the restaurant "Buffalos" for their nachos. Stay away from the street with Green/Blue graffiti (Calle de Amargura).
Ask locals about places to go downtown but go in big groups because it gets sketchy. There is a salsa/bachata club that is well-known, with Karoke upstairs. Escazú is safer but needs a taxi. Watch out for fake taxis who will rip you off. Look for official taxis with meters. For the spare weekend they loved Puerto Viejo on the Caribbean side. A bus can take you there for about $20.
